Black-Boxing Sustainability
نویسنده
چکیده
The term ‘sustainable’ has rapidly become a ubiquitous prefix for many contemporary issues, professions and disciplines. This paper contextualizes the debate by exploring how the term ‘sustainable’ has emerged within the field ofarchitecture. The paper examines the semiotics of sustainability; how the meaning of this word has been produced from an assemblage of words, signs and practices. Adopting‘Actor-Network Theory’ (ANT) methodology to examinethe embedding of sustainabilityasthe dominant paradigm in architecture. The creation of a definition of sustainability has been hybridized into a social, legal, economic, political and scientific framework. A process of ‘sustainabilization’ has occurred not only within architecture but across a number of different subjects. The research investigates how carbon-dioxide has played an important role in the promulgation of sustainability. The current framework within which ‘sustainability’ operates is currently too narrow and inflexible (i.e. black-boxed) with too much emphasis on CO2 to respond meaningfully to the demands from human development.

The Reflexive Journal: inside the Black Box
It was Habermas who commented on the fact that knowledge is never interest free. But it often appears to be on the surface. Journals with their rigorous systems of double blind peer review certainly do their best to avoid partiality and add to the trustworthiness of the process. But their deeply routinised systems contribute to the “black boxing” of knowledge production. This article wishes to ...

Men’s boxing is a sport with successful, high profile and affluent participants and one that includes many of the very much less well off. It has traditionally involved high participation by men from black and minority ethnic backgrounds. The sport is beset by contradictions, between racism and opportunity, discipline and excess, beautiful bodies and those that are fractured and damaged, and be...
متن کاملBlack-boxing and cause-effect power
Reductionism assumes that causation in the physical world occurs at the micro level, excluding the emergence of macro-level causation. We challenge this reductionist assumption by demonstrating that, once causal power is properly defined and measured, it is possible for a macro level to “beat” the micro level. Here, this was done through a principled, well-defined measure of intrinsic cause-eff...
متن کاملThe susceptibility level and sustainability potential of groupers; Plectropomus sp. in a marine national park
Wakatobi National Park has a tropical marine ecosystem with typically dynamic aquatic resources, and it also has a potentially massive number of groupers such as red (Plectropomus leopardus) and black groupers (Plectropomus areolatus). However, the sustainability of the grouper resources has not been managed effectively and environmentally friendly. This study aims to determin...
متن کاملRequirements Engineering Blinders: Exploring Information Systems Developers’ Black-boxing of the Emergent Character of Requirements
In this paper we focus empirical and conceptual attention on the social construction of information systems (IS) requirements, and illustrate that IS developers too often choose to ignore, and thus effectively black-box, the complexities of gathering requirements in order to simplify both the difficulties of their work and their relations with customers. The empirical contribution of this paper...
